Descaling the Jura E8 and E6: how many tablets and how it works

Does your Jura show "Ontkalking" (Descaling) or "Apparaat ontkalken" (Descale machine)? You need 3 Jura descaling tablets, dissolved in 500 ml of water. That is what all the E8 and E6 manuals we checked say. Allow about 40 minutes, or about 20 for the E8 ED. Do not interrupt the programme: that can damage your machine.

How to descale a Jura E8 (EC)

  1. Open the Cockpit on the home screen, choose Ontkalking (Descaling) and then Starten (Start).
  2. At "Restwaterbak legen" (empty the drip tray), empty the drip tray and the coffee grounds container and put them back.
  3. Separately, dissolve 3 tablets completely in 500 ml of water. This may take a few minutes.
  4. Take out the water tank, empty it, pour in the solution and put it back.
  5. Place one container under the hot water spout and one under the milk spout and press Verder (Continue). Water comes out of both several times.
  6. At "Restwaterbak legen" (empty the drip tray), empty both containers again.
  7. Empty the containers and place them under the coffee spout and the milk spout. Rinse the tank thoroughly, fill it with fresh, cold water, put it back and press Verder (Continue).
  8. At the end, empty both containers once more.
Different version?The E6 works with one container under the milk spout and a rotary dial that you open and close when the display asks you to. Follow the display, and the manual matching the letters after E8 or E6 on your rating plate. We have not checked the E8 EA, SA, EB and SB step by step.

Do you need to descale with a CLARIS filter?

As long as a CLARIS filter is in use, the machine does not need descaling according to the manuals and the message does not appear. You do need to descale the water tank itself separately from time to time: take out the filter, fill the tank completely, dissolve 3 tablets in it, leave it for a few hours and then rinse thoroughly.

Can you turn the message off?

The manuals do not list a setting to turn off the descaling message. The message disappears when you run the programme. The water hardness (adjustable from 1 to 30 °dH) determines how often it is needed. Set it correctly, but do not use it to avoid the message.
